Essential Oils & Aromatherapy
I am sure by now you have heard about essential oils and maybe even have a friend who offer theirs up when you get a headache or start coughing. (I’M THAT FRIEND)
You may kindly refuse wondering if your friend has gone a bit crazy? You are not alone! At least that it’s what I did when I first heard about them…” You mean to tell me that if I rub this oils on the back of my neck before going to bed, I am finally going to get some sleep?” Uh huh. But you do it anyway, just to appease her thinking.
It won’t hurt, right? And then, what the?…It works! You slept through the night and woke up feeling refreshed!! Must be a fluke.
But the next day you wake up with a scratchy throat and you call your friend and ask if she has any oils for keeping a cold away…and she does.
I hear stories like these all the time, and I always feel a sense of pride knowing that I just introduced a natural alternative to the way my friends take care of their health. I know that they will reach for a bottle of essential oil before they grab an over-the-counter medication or prescription drug.
But how do they work?
The blood-brain barrier is the barrier membrane between the circulating blood and the brain that prevents certain damaging substances from reaching brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid.
The American Medical Association (AMA) determined that if they could find an agent that would pass the blood-brain barrier, they would be able to cure Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. In June of 1994, it was documented by the Medical University of Berlin, Germany, and Vienna, Austria, that sesquiterpenes have the ability to go beyond the blood-brain barrier.
High level of sesquiterpenes, found in the essential oils of frankincense and sandalwood, help increase the amount of oxygen in the limbic system of the brain, particularly around the pineal and pituitary glands. This leads to an increase in secretions of antibodies, endorphins, and neurotransmitters.
Also present in the limbic system of the brain is a gland called the amygdala. In 1989, it was discovered that the amygdala plays a major role in the storing and releasing of emotional trauma. The only way to stimulate this gland is with fragrance or the sense of smell. Therefore, with aromatherapy and essential oils we are now able to release emotional trauma.
Young Living Essential Oils
Not all essential oils are created equal, and it is important to understand why that oil you bought at the convenience store did not work for you.
For the purpose of education, I am only going to talk about what enables PURE, THERAPEUTIC-GRADE Young Living essential oils to provide such incredible benefits.
“I never make a product for a profit. I make it for a purpose.” -D. Gary Young
Essential oils are chemically very heterogeneous—meaning they are very diverse in their effects and can perform several different functions. Synthetic chemicals are completely opposite in that they have basically one action. This heterogeneity gives essential oils a paradoxical nature which can be difficult to understand. However, essential oils can be compared to another paradoxical group—human beings. For example, a man can play many roles: father, husband, friend, coworker, accountant, teacher, church volunteer, etc. And so it is with essential oils: lavender can be used for burns, insect bites, headaches, PMS, insomnia, stress, and so forth.
The heterogeneous benefits of an oil depends greatly on its chemical constituents—and not only on the existence of specific constituents but also on the constituent amounts in proportion to the other constituents that are present in the same oil. Some individual oils may have anywhere from 200 to 800 different chemical constituents. However, of the possible 800, only about 200 of those have so far been identified. Although not everything is known about all the different constituents, most of them can be grouped into a few distinct families, each with some dominant characteristics.
This may all sound Greek to you, and an easier way to learn about the oils is to just put them on your skin and experience their benefits for yourself. You’ll be amazed at what one drop of essential oil can do for you. Shoot me a note, and I’ll send you some samples!
